Tonight Cassidy and I were walking hand in hand through Lowe’s while I searched for some suitable window coverings for my classroom. I hate Lowe’s, it overwhelms the hell out of me and I avoid if at all possible so to have Cass along for conversation was a good thing. She was pattering on about all things ‘tween when I suddenly heard her voice rise an octave, this is always my cue to tune in and be mom-like. “Mom, I’m funny looking.” This was said with a dramatic sigh and dip of her shoulders.

“Well, of course you are, honey. You’re 12 1/2. Your parts are all growing at different rates and you have a mouth full of metal.” I almost immediately realized this was the most wrong of replies when she turned her brown eyes towards me and her above mentioned mouth trembled.

“I’m an ugly duckling, Mom. I’m ugly now and always will be. I’ll never have my swan day.”

Oh dear. Ouch. True enough she is funny looking right now. Girl is 5’4″, 85 pounds. Add a head of thick red hair, freckles, brown eyes and the metal mouth and it’s not an easy package. But the thing is that in about five years Sister is going to be a stunner the likes of which can’t be touched by regular ole humans. She’ll hit about 5’9″, have the sort of physique most of us gals can only dream of, the red hair and freckles will calm down by then. But more importantly Cassidy’s got it going on inside. She is not only smart, she is a smart ass. She can deliver a zinger without even blinking an eye and leave the recipient, often me, reeling on their ass. Cass reads, writes and delivers. She will be a star and a swan all in one breath. And her one day? It will be a lifetime of fabulousness. She doesn’t get that now. Right now she is the lone red fish in a sea of blondes and brunettes. She is lanky and knobby when the others are curvy and soft. I want to tell her it will even out, and I do. She doesn’t believe it right now because these words come from her mom who is old, 39 is ancient to her. But her day will come and when it does I hope she looks back at her awkward days and remembers the path she travled to get there. And so tonight I replied, “Sister Child, this too shall pass. Your duck days will end and your swan reign will begin. You are destined for all things beautiful. I know this much is true.” Of course to this she merely rolled her eyes and heaved another sigh.

Today Loren and Cassidy started back to school and I began my new job at a new school. We aren’t a household to boast about our coolness with transitions. Although the three of us reported back with good days, the upheaval of ending the easy glide of summer break and jumping back into the order of structure left us all a bit tender. Or bitchy. Or irritable. Or ass-like. Just depending on one’s view of the picture. The gist of it is this: We are all tired, Loren was almost an hour late getting home, Devon was a monster to end all monsters for the evening, Cass got up about four hours too early this morning and we are all missing summer. All I know is that they have gone to bed and I am loving them all the more for it.

In honor of summer memories I have been going through some of my favorite images from our camping trips. Contrary to the hogwash Kelly Lynne likes to spread about out forays into Nature, we actually do venture out where there is no pavement or electricity and the bugs really do bite. It’s hard work dragging all three of my kids out into the wilderness at the same time. Loren obviously prefers to be anywhere other than with us. Cassidy needs to be catered to most every moment. And Devon wants to suck it all in and run rampant like a wild thing through the woods. Good times.

Clockwise from the top: One of the only things to capture Loren’s interest on our latest trip was my mom’s new camera that can take pictures and video underwater. The above shot of him is one of my all time favorites because I can hear him saying, “Holy shit! Look at this, Heather! So fuckin’ cool!” Yes, I will long treasure the excitement of that sentence. I can’t recall what drama lead to me holding Cass but I like to think I am being tender there. I love the shot of Cass as she looks out over the lake. We were getting ready to go out paddling and she could barely wait to get out in the water. She is my little mermaid baby. Going out on the duckie boat fascinated Devon. He kept trolling around the beach demanding ride after ride until we all had numb butts from sitting in the bottom of the boat. Looking at these pictures makes me remember why I love the monsters I call my children.

When Loren was almost eleven he came to me one day and gravely said, “Mom, I know you’re the Easter Bunny. I also know you’re Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy.” He paused here and I awaited what I thought might be accusations about betrayal. Instead he wrapped me in a hug and exclaimed, “Thank you, Mom! Thank you so much! All these years it was you! How did you do it? We always got everything we wanted! And I know sometimes you couldn’t have afforded it. You’re the best!”

Over the weekend Cass cornered me in the kitchen and said, “I know all about you. How you’re the Easter Bunny and Santa and the Tooth Fairy.” This time I really waited for the shit to fly. Her take went a little bit like this, “So, here’s the deal. Now that I know, I want in. Tonight I want to do the baskets, stuff the eggs, plan the treasure hunt. After all, you want to keep Devon in the dark about it, right?”

One is pure in spirit and the other an extortionist. I’m raising them right.

Good god, sometimes being a female is entirely too much work. Why, after 38+ years of this am I not catching on, I just don’t know. But it continues to get me time and again. Today I woke up all in a bind because I actually had to move my ass in order to get things accomplished so that I can go out of town tomorrow, that was enough in itself. But add to that some good ole PMS and being me was just a bit much. Of course it took me a few hours to grasp the PMS aspect because I am clever that way, before that I seriously wondered if perhaps I was going insane or if my Inner Bitch had hatched a coup and completely taken over the show. It felt like my skin was several sizes too small and that if any of my children merely touched me I would jump out of my wrapping and claw my way out of the house. I could go on and on about how I fantasized of selling my children and buying a ticket to Vegas to pursue my long dormant dreams of becoming a showgirl, but I’ll give it a rest. Instead I’ll go with the glass half full approach and focus on the good, a tactic I tried today in McDonald’s when Devon loudly refused to eat his Happy Meal -of course, why would I think it would be any different- and then took the toy up to the cashier for a trade in because it wasn’t the Man-Fish toy he had envisioned. Yes, right there and then I wanted to shed my cumbersome skin and slither away from all that was mine. But instead I took the high road, looked at my angel and thought of all the reasons I wanted to stay and listen to him number off the reasons he absolutely could NOT manage to chew a single morsel of chicken nugget. Following are a few of the reasons I adore my three:

1. I love the way when I nuzzle Devon’s neck he scrunches up his shoulders and erupts in to fits of giggles, taking my face with him as we collapse in a pile on the floor. He never seems to tire of it and I find it endlessly endearing.

2. I love the way Loren bends his large self over and rests his now taller head on my shoulder. I am continually in awe of the fact that this 5’10″ being was once my tiny cuddly boy.

3. I love Cassidy’s sense of humor. It is wicked, fast and beyond clever. Sometimes she says the sassiest things and I can imagine the brilliant woman she will one day become. I look forward to knowing that woman.

4. I love it that Devon requires my presence in his car bed every morning before he is able to rise and greet the day. I snuggle up to him and he tells me of his dreams and that I am his favorite. It never fails to give me courage to face the day.

5. I love it that Loren requires the same routine to begin his days, only he has a large futon and not a giant, red plastic car bed. And I suspect now that he is nearing 16 he censors his dreams for my benefit. At least I hope so.

6. I love it that Cass greets the mornings snarling and kicking ass. She scares me, but to watch her unfurl and begin her day is inspiring, like a predator preparing for a kill.

7. I love to hear Devon’s stubby foot falls running through the house. He is forever in motion and his energy is contagious.

8. I love to watch Loren as he jumps on the tramp of constructs jumps in the snow for his ski tricks. His devotion to physical play is admirable.

9. I love to see Cass’ profile as she curls up in a chair and reads one of her books. She has so much pent up energy and yet she will sit for hours and read, a slight frown between her brows as she chews on her thumbnail.

10. I love it most when I fall asleep at night and know my three children are tucked safely in their beds. It is a security and satisfaction unlike anything else I know. I picture them in their beds so full of life and everything beautiful that they are right now. And then I feel complete.

Little Miss to me as she gets in the car after school: “Hey, Mom! How are you? How was your day? What did you do today?”
I am immediately suspicious. I love her to pieces and I know she loves me…but. Usually when she gets in the car her nose is buried in a book and she holds out her hand for food while she continues reading until we are home. Then she flits out of the car and into the house where she inhales some more food and then saunters to the couch for yet more reading. Between then and dinner she surfaces as more food is needed. So any sudden interest in my time is a red flag.
Me to her: “Um, I had a good day. I took Devon to OT where he actually ate an entire piece of fruit leather. It was very exciting.”
Her: “Really? That is so cool. Good for him!” She replies with just a tad too much enthusiasm in her voice.
Me: “So what gives, Red? What do you want?”
Her: “Twilight!!!!!!!!!!!! It comes out of Friday. Some of the girls are cutting school to go see it and their moms are even letting them! Can I go? Huh?”
Me: “No. Duh.”
At this point she opened up her book and refused to look at me. That is until we went to the grocery store where she talked me into a $10 Twilight magazine. Ten. Dollars. For a freaking magazine with crappy quality pictures. But she worked me over good for my Uncool Mom Guilt of not letting her ditch school. Little witch.

As heard by my mother who happened to sit in the opposing team’s bleachers this afternoon at Cassidy’s soccer game:
Soccer mom A: “Hmmm. That little red head is pretty good.”
Soccer mom B: “Yep. Watch out for the red head, number 2. She’s fast.”
Soccer dad A: “Sure thing, number two is tricky.”
Soccer mom A: “Hey! The red head is pushing again! She’s not supposed to do that.”
Soccer dad B: “She’s just plain bad and dirty.” Said with a hint of awe.
Our team won. Cass came home bruised and covered in dirt. She was utterly content with her beastly win, very proud of her dirty fighting ways.
I sure do love it when her inner predator gets played out on the field and is too tired to chew on me.

Some days are sprinkled with a few turds here and there, just when you think you are in the clear, you look down only to find a new one squished in your toes. My last few days have been littered with shit mines. For a few hours all will be well and then it seems I walk around the corner and encounter Captain Shit. It mostly has pertained to Cassidy’s health. A couple of weeks ago I was convinced she had an eating disorder. Then last week the doctor, not our regular one, thought she had a bladder infection. Now an ultrasound later we know her kidneys and liver work fine but she needs a CT scan to see if she has kidney stones.
I know it isn’t all about me, but I honestly feel as though I am just now finally emerging from the aftermath of Devon’s heart mess when he was nine weeks old. The thought of going through the hospital thing again is just too much. It left me paralyzed for much of yesterday, so much so that I went to my mother’s house, tucked Devon in for a nap and then went to her bed, aka The Mother Ship, for a nap of my own. When Devon had his surgery he didn’t know what was going on, but Cassidy is another story. And I don’t know if she even needs surgery. Furthermore, I am wondering if it is all my fault. She has been complaining off and on for years that her tummy hurts. Sometimes I didn’t even believe her because, well she’s Cassidy and Drama is her game.

This afternoon, in an attempt to quiet the noise in my head and give her a fun afternoon, we went to the park with a frined of hers. We filled up water balloons, had a super soaker fight and climber trees. The girls and Devon ran around, rolled in the grass and laughed. I have decided that if we have to go through another round of hospital craziness or spend many visits trying to discover the origin of the blood in Cass’s urine, we are still going to live life and find the laughter in our afternoons.
