God help us all for today we are embarking on a family outing: a camping trip. It has been at least a year and a half since we have done anything all together; Loren is often off striking some sort of cool teen pose, Cass is a budding socialite, which leaves Devon and me at home most of the time to enjoy what we do best ~puttering about the Manor and digging in the dirt. But today, by damn, my mom, Loren, Cass, Devon and I are loading up and heading out.We are going en masse because Loren is grounded and I thought a fitting punishment, one that would really make him consider the beauty of freedom, would be to spend the entire weekend cooped up in small spaces with his immediate family. I am a good mom that way.
Last weekend my mom bought a slide-in camper to go with her big ass truck, a dream she has been mulling over for 30 months or so. Three years ago for Mother’s Day my dad bought her the truck with the intention that when he retired they would buy a fifth wheel and tour the country. He died six weeks later and left my mom with dreams of the open road; she has never quite given up the hope to somehow make that a reality. Today we make our maiden voyage with Mia at helm of the rig and me following up in her SUV; we had to take an additional car because she can’t be parted from her dog and my dog can’t be left home alone or he will destroy the house. Cassidy has a soccer tournament about 90 miles away and this seems as good a weekend as any to make the effort. I have never taken my kids camping, yes we live in the heart of the Rocky Mountains and we have not ventured in to them. And, no, camping in a rig that boasts its own toilet and shower is not exactly the sort of camping I was raised with, but is sure is a lot more comfortable. So we are off, well sort of, first we have to stop and buy food and a muzzle for my biting dog.
This is Mia with her truck right before the RV fellows added on her camper. In order to give Devon an idea of what it was I told him it was like a wee house on the back of her truck. He thought that was super funny.
This is Mia, her best friend Peggy and their friend Bill at the end of a long day of waiting and touring the wee truck house. Mia is a hopeless ham.
This is just a cool stained glass ostrich we happened upon the day we were camper shopping.
Can you all sleep in there? You should take pictures of the inside. Hope you all have fun.
We brought an extra tent for Loren and me. But we can fit in there for eating and what not. I’ll upload some pictures soon.
