Were it not for Loren I would be stuck in the comfy, worn denim lap of The Dave Mathews Band. His devotion to You Tube constantly brings me new music. Were YouTube a high school course he would straight A’s. The great thing about a blog is that I can go back through my drivel and gauge whether or not I am making any progress or simply stuck in the same self-pitying rut month after month. It appears that a year ago I was indeed in the same sort of position I am now, if [...] When I first started writing Caloden I did so out of a need to sort through my life during a specific, difficult span. At the time we had weathered Devon’s first year and faced the concept of losing him, my relationship with Matt was in some sort of neglected post-divorce, post-make-up, post-third child pergatory where [...] This week has been nothing less than hellish. It was parent/teacher conference weeek which meant I had to compile a year’s worth of paintings and scribbling for the eleven preschool children I track and compile all my observations into four pages of smitter-smatter about how and why each child is a gift from the universe [...] It’s true. Nada. No can do. Writing ten reports on the motor skils of preschoolers has left me with not a thing. It’s just preschool. That’s what the parents all say. But these four page parent/teacher conference reprots I am trying to churn out say otherwise. I am quickly realizing there is no physical way I will meet my deadline of tomorrow morning. I am only two in and have nine left to go. Fuuuuuuuck. When Loren was almost eleven he came to me one day and gravely said, “Mom, I know you’re the Easter Bunny. I also know you’re Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy.” He paused here and I awaited what I thought might be accusations about betrayal. Instead he wrapped me in a hug and exclaimed, “Thank [...] This is a question I ask myself on days such as today. When Devon awakes with a bellow, “It’s EAAAAASSSTERRRRRRRRRRRRR! The bunny has been here! I know it! Get up! Get Uuuuuuupppp!” When Loren is uppity and disrespectful and all I hear out of his mouth is the voice of his father, the part of [...] This is such a gorgeous song. Fiona Apple seems to be a bit freaky for sure, but her voice is absolutely stunning. Toss in a Frank Sinatra cover and I am sold, sold, sold. This afternoon Devon and I attended a birthday party of a ittle girl who attends the preschool where I teach. I am not sure how Devon made the cut but I know the wee lass is a clever little thing and the more guests she has the better her loot haul. Last night Devon and [...] |
