Tonight Loren brought home a friend for an overnight. Not really big deal except that he hasn’t done this in quite awhile. His school is in the next town over and so all his friends are there, which of course means Loren spends most of his time there. So when Loren mentioned his friend wanted to come and visit all that is wonky at The Manor, I was mildly suspicious. I mean, what would they want here that they couldn’t accomplish in the neighborhood where eight of his friends live within a three block radius? We don’t grow illegal cash crops, our liquor cabinet is not bursting and The Manor reveals all in terms of any efforts to sneak out, and even if you do succeed we live five miles out in the middle of nowhere. I know this because I tried a couple of times in high school to sneak away with absolutely no success and a couple of pissed off parents. But Loren assured me his friend was nice a guy and they would be on their best behaviors. H
Here’s the thing, I like this boy. I mean I really like him. No, not in a Mary Kay Letourneau way. Ew. This new kid is just a a really neat guy. He can hold a conversation with a mom and a grandmother and eat dinner at the same time. He is interested in Devon and more than willing to answer his barrage of inane questions, some that are not too unlike that weird kid from the Jerry Macguire movie. And he is kind to Cassidy. Not too kind because although she is only in sixth grade I suspect some of Loren’s friends will be more than willing and friendly in a couple of years. Part of me just wants to take Loren and his friend in a big mama bear hug and tell them, “Stick it out, you two! Give it a go! You’re so good for each other! Like peanut butter and jelly, you’re meant to be together!” But I suspect they would both look at me in disgust and then mumble, “Ugh, you’re so gay.” So I won’t do it. But inside I am all giggly at the idea that my son has a friend I like having in the house. And I know that if Loren ever gets a bug in his butt to read this post he will be mortified to the depths of his soul.
