About a week ago Loren and I were driving to his spring guitar presentation. I always enjoy the moments when I can spend time just with him. And as often happens with Loren, I just drove and listened while he rattled on in a sort of non-stop stream of free association. “Yeah, so did you know the 80′s are coming back? Only this time it will be cool. Hey, did you know my history teacher is on Youtube? Yeah, he’s a total nut. you gotta see it. Man, I need to change my socks, I can smell ‘em from all the way up here at my nose. So, I might need some money this weekend to go see the new Indiana Jones movie. Hey,…” And so it went. Then, he happened to look out the window and said, “Hey, mom! Look! Isn’t that one of Chloe’s moms? She was the pretty one who rocked at golf. What was her name?”
Most of my responses are limited to, “Oh?” Or, “Yup.” Or the occasional, “Wow, sounds cool.” But I had always liked the woman to whom Loren was referring and answered, “That was Maria. She truly was lovely. Too bad they broke up.”
“What?” Loren screeched so loud I thought maybe I had hit a raccoon. “No! They can’t do that?”
“Why not?” I replied, wondering why he was so interested in something having virtually nothing to do with him.
“Duh, mom. They’re lesbians. They can’t break up.”
Again I asked, “Why not?”
For that I got an eye roll for asking such an obviously stupid question. “Because they’re girls. And they’re just more, you know, girl-like. There’s double the girl thing.”
Enjoying the direction of the chat, I asked, “So does that mean that if you’re a lesbian you can’t break up? That your love is somehow better? More pure?”
“Of course.”
“So what about two guys? Does that apply to men as well?”
Loren thought about it for moment and replied, “Yup. Because they’re a little more tender, too.”
And to think, sometimes I fancy him to just be a self-absorbed fool.

These are pictures from a recent graduation party at Devon’s preschool. Luckily for Devon he was not old enough to graduate this year because he couldn’t be bothered to tear himself away from the muddy pond. It puzzled me that none of the other kids took off their clothing to roll in the water.
