This afternoon Loren called me from his cell phone to inform me he had experienced an epiphany. Wanting to believe in good things I told him to tell me all about it when he got home. But knowing a wee bit about the teenage creature I was secretly dreading the revelation because any sort of major news would be bound to involve his immediate happiness and not something like wanting to inspire world peace or his sudden need to get along better with his sister. Long story short: he has decided he wants to go to the local private prep school next year. This instead of the lovely public high school he is currently attending. The high school that has wonderful art and film programs for a creative young fellow like himself. The high school where he is doing quite well academically. The high school that is free. Free! After a zillion years of Waldorf tuition Loren is now at a school that is free! And the one where he wants to go? Oh dear. A tuition bill that exceeds many colleges.
I so very want to support Loren’s endeavors. But hello? I am a single mom of three children. And those other two? They enjoy the little luxuries like eating and new socks and underwear every now and again. Is it worth the effort to go through the application process for next year? Should I go back to the world of banking? Or maybe I should invest a small fortune in plastic surgery, lose 40 pounds and seek out a sugar daddy. The problem with that last plan is that I suspect sugar daddies aren’t really looking for single moms of three who are nearly embracing 40 in the eye and not big wage earners. It’s really quite a predicament.

What are his reasons for wanting to change schools?
After what you have listed: The high school with wonderful art and film programs; the high school where he is doing quite well academically; the high school that is free– well, is the private prep school really going to be better than all that? All that you can have for free?
Maybe I am just a bad mother or a lazy mother, but I wouldn’t even entertain the idea because of the cost. Frankly, I won’t even entertain costs like that for college– they have a school here they can attend with their father’s discount. It’s a good enough school, and that is where they are going.
Am I terrible?
that was jen, btw.
