Current events, I know’em all

I rarely, if ever, claim to be anything more than I am. And what I am is completely immersed in my little world where I raise my three kids, poke away at the keyboard, paint with pretty colors and occasionally get my heart rate up in hopes that I will not succumb to a premature heart attack. I don’t know much about the world outside the front door. There are wars, famines and political mayhems that I just don’t know anything about.
Last night, in an effort to make myself a better person, I sat down and watched an episode of Washington Week. Okay, it wasn’t really because I had any delusions of self-improvement. It was because Loren had been part of the production crew for two days. It is part of the summer internship that he is doing for a media company. He called me three times from the set to tell me when the show was going to air. I took it as a hint that I should probably try to watch it despite the fact that in June we disconnected the cable TV to stop the daily visits from Hannah Montana. My brother went into town and bought and bug like antenna thing and we hooked it up to the TV, ghetto style. Then we sat down and watched the show. Of course Loren was nowhere on the air, but knowing that he had helped to run the cable, set up the lights and do sound checks helped to make it more interesting. And it really was interesting. It was stimulating to hear people talk about current issues and the future of this country’s political scene. I’m not saying that I plan to make Washington Week part of my Friday evening routines, though it’s not as though those nights are filled with social commitments. But I might make more of an effort to pull my head out of its ever comfy sandy hole more frequently.

How cool that Loren helped make the show! My kids can’t even make crafts yet.
I don’t get too involved in politics or current events either. I know the basics just because they’re on my computer’s home page.
Maybe I should pull my head out a little more too.
