Today was not only Mother’s Day but it would have also been my 14th wedding anniversary. Would have. Would have had I not divorced him 4 1/2 years ago. Would have had we worked on things. Would have if…blah, blah, blah.
Today my mother and I spent the day alone without my kids. Some of the more sensitive mothers might have wondered at this, but I ran into a fellow mom in the store who when I told her about my day of no children turned green from head to toe with envy. “I so very much understand,” she cooed. “You are sooooooo lucky! Good for you!” That was enough validation right there to allow me to continue through my day without a single smidgen of guilt and in peaceful aloneness.
The kids came home after dinner and we shared a special dessert of orange pound cake topped with strawberries and canned whipped cream. For Loren and Cass there are few things that are as fun as cream in a can. Thankfully they are not to the point that they sneak off into the other room and suck off the gas to get high. But they do so enjoy tipping back their heads and filling their mouths with fluff. Devon took one look at them tonight and tipped his head back, mouth open like a small white headed bird, and chirped, “Cream me too, Mai-Mai! Creeeeaaaaam!” What the hell, it was Mother’s Day, so I pushed the nib and filled him up. He was so surprised to find his mouth filled with sweetness that he almost jumped out of his skin. There are few things better in Devon’s world that vanilla yogurt, but instant whipped cream magically appearing in his mouth seems to top it all. I must have filled up his mouth six times before he collapsed on the floor giggling at the wonder of it all.
After the cream frenzy Loren and Cass went outside to play soccer and Devon played in the freshly weeded flower beds I worked on all weekend. He was so happy in the dirt that I am considering sacrificing one bed to his love of dirt and small shovels. If it keeps him happy, why not. Cass was the next to fall. And now Loren is up doing all the homework he didn’t finish at his dad’s place. A lovely weekend and an even better evening.

Mine still haven’t outgrown the whipped cream orgies.
Glad your day went so well.
