Stepping ever so slightly outside of the box

There are moments on my weekends without the kids when I pause and realize that I could be doing just about anything in the whole wide world. Yes, that’s right. For 48 hours, twice a month, the possibilities are practically endless. Or they would be if…I had more energy, a deeper pocket book, a wordrobe that extended beyond my newest pair of J.Lo knock off velour mommy pants, a social life. At least that is what I always tell myself so that I don’t feel too pitiful rattling about my mother’s house and unpacking yet another box of my crap. But today I was feeling just a tad bit restless and I decided to shake things up a bit. I didn’t get completely whacko, mind you, but I did step outside of my box for a few hours this afternoon. I went to a movie.
There are not too many things that can lure me away from the safety of the Manor, but a new Hugh Grant movie does beckon me something fierce. And so today I showered, put on some mascara, donned my J. Lo’s and drove to the matinee. And I was not to be disappointed. Hugh’s new movie, Music and Lyrics, with Drew Barrymore was an absolute hoot. It has a bit of everything for the die hard chick flick lover. Not only does Hugh sing in it, but he is a sassy washed up 80′s pop star. He is a merge between A-Ha and Wham, but with the sauciness that is all Hugh. It would have been that much better had he narrated it like he does in About a Boy and Nottinghill, but for that small, sad population of us who have been without a new HG movie for fall too long (no, American Dreamz doesn’t count) it was a good fix. I sat alone in the dark with my V-8 and Tootsie Pop and had one of the most enjoyable afternoons I have had in far too long.
I hope at some point to include another living and breathing human being in my jaunts outside of the house, perhaps someday even a male one, but this was pretty damn good for today.

Hugh Grant. Singing 80s music. I cannot imagine two secret pleasures more perfectly matched.
