Adventures

A couple of months ago Loren asked me, “Hey, Mom? Do you have January 24th open?”
Immediately suspicious that not only was he calling me mom rather than Heather, but that he thinking about a point in time beyond the next South Park episode, I replied, “Um, I don’t know. Why?”
“Oh, um,” he stalled. “I was wondering if you could go down to Denver to pick up this Canadian snowskate dude named Rico and take him to the X-Games.”
My imeediate thought processes were like this;
* A Canadian named Rico?
* You want me travel over 400 miles round trip when it might be my day off and I could take a nap?
*Why the hell can’t he get a flight in to Aspen?
*If he can’t get a better flight, then why the hell can’t he take an airport shuttle?
*Why would anybody travel that far just to be in a snowskating exhibition?
*Why the hell do any of you even snow skate? What’s the point?
But I didn’t say any of those things. I caught my bitchy self before she opened her trashy mouth and said, “Um, well Loren, I don’t know what I am doing on a day 60 days from now. Can we discuss this when it gets closer?”
Well, discuss it we did. Wednesday we got up at 5 a.m., well really 4 a.m. for me since I apparently don’t know how to set the alarm clock. We were on the road by 6, only to receive a frantic phone call from Rico’s mother saying that the other snowskater(I hadn’t realized there would be two of them) had missed the flight; they would arrive 4 hours later. Instead of turning around and taking a nap, we had Devon with us and he was hell bent on going on an adventure, we kept traveling. We ended up stopping at the best art supply store in the world. Visiting my Godmother at her flower store, getting a make-over at the Bobbi Brown counter at Saks Fifth Avenue and shopping for SSAT prep books. We then picked up the Canadian dudes, headed back to the mountains, snowskated on a mountain pass at dusk, attended the X-Games before they even opened and had a pretty great adventure.
Since then I have been back to the X-Games twice, a place I vow each year that I will never again go. As bone freaking tired as I am, it has been a pretty great few days. When I am not so beat I will share a tale about Loren and his award winning snow skating. Until then….

    At least he didn’t ask you the night before the big event. Still, 400 miles? You have my admiration. These days, even the 135 miles to the big city wears me out. I’ve begun taking Amtrak when I’m the only one going.

    That is an adorable picture and I love that you took Devon along for ‘the adventure.’
