Thorns

Whenever one of my children moans and groans about one child or teacher in particular, I tell them that no matter where they go to work, live or play, there will always be that one pain in the ass who makes their lives difficult. The best way to deal with this, I tell them, is to turn the other cheek and rise above the occasion. But to actual adhere to this practice is sometimes easier said than done. Big breath in and a big breath out. Rise above, rise above, rise above. If I tell myself that enough times maybe it will work.

When my younger half-brother was in twelfth grade English, moaning and complaining about the teacher and how worthless the class was and how he’d never use this stuff in his life and WHAT WAS THE POINT OF TAKING ENGLISH FOR FOUR YEARS ANYWAY, I told him that he could consider this experience a lesson in life. Learning to weather a useless high school English class would prepare him for all the mundane, necessary tasks that come with being an adult, like waiting in line at the DMV, doing your taxes, getting bids to get your gutters fixed, etc. I thought it was one of my more brilliant moments as a big sister!
